Perfection is a Moving Target

Perfection is hard to achieve

Here is what I accomplished this weekend:

1. Got Hammered.

2. Skipped a 10k I was signed up for.

3. Watched 5 episodes of Game of Thrones (cool show by the way, I’m late to the party.)

4. Pissed off My Fiance who wasn’t even in town.

5. At age 32 played beer pong. (1-1 record)

Impressive right?  Not every weekend or day can be fitness or nutrition competition…

Perfection is a Moving Target

As a fitness professional and health blogger, I like to think I live a life that might inspire others to move their needle a bit.  I hope to help people by sharing my experience of what some might consider extraordinary health seeking. I write a lot of posts about Spartan Races, long trail races, and advanced nutrition strategies.  A reader might think I’m just this super healthy guy who is way too into his health.  They might say, “well it’s easy for you, this is all you do.”

To that I would say, “It’s not always easy.”

Like many people, my natural state is horizontal.

Sometimes I want to sit around and do nothing just like most people do.  I don’t always want to get out and hit that 10 mile run or Ruck with a 45lb weight vest uphill for 70 minutes.  But I do understand that doing nothing has a certain inertia.  Considering that, I think it’s important to have a short memory and not stay on your ass. Canada  Another very important factor is to be signed up for something.  Anything.  Just put something physical in the distant future that you have to be accountable too.

Today I forced myself to hit a 10 miler. Yesterday I was too busy waking up on a couch like a 22 year old to get up and run the 10k I had signed up for.  The rest of the day I was way too busy watching pointless TV programming and NBA playoffs to get a run in.  I didn’t wallow in self pity or wait for next week.  I turned my momentum back around and started the week off right.  I think this is an important concept.  At times you gotta let lose.  Like Jack Nicholson’s character in the shining says, “all work no play makes jack a dull boy.”  But when the dust settles, you have to remember your priorities and goals no matter what they are.  Don’t stay stuck in the past.

As much as all the fitness gurus would like you to think they are perfect, none of them are.  There is no such thing as perfection because what some might think is perfection others might see as a fault.  They all have set backs and lazy days, but they don’t always want to share that. I have my good days and my bad days. My only hope is to make my good days outnumber my bad days.  That way, in the long term, I can make a little bit of progress.

In case you do have a bit too much to drink here is a product I like to use to get my electrolytes balanced back out*

Combined with a good whey protein, you can get you aminos and electrolytes in check.  Here is one of my favorites*:
